Singapore

Inspired by 18th-century French châteaux and their American Gilded Age counterparts, this house in the Botanic Garden District of Singapore has a dramatic domed oval staircase that unites all three floors. The house adapts to the tropical climate with the addition of a conservatory and garden loggia. The interiors, combining French and English furniture with modern art, reflect the connoisseurship and eclecticism of the 19th-century “Rothschild style,” a point of view championed in the 20th century on both sides of the Atlantic by such collectors as the Noailles in Paris and the Rockefellers in New York.
